The Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) that serve as the hub for OAA funded senior services nationwide have their challenges with a growing customer base and shrinking federal funding. You read about how some AAAs have become social entrepreneurs to add additional funding to the federal dollars they receive in an effort to expand their service provision. The decentralized structure of the AAAs allows for this, which can result in creative and innovative programming. Unfortunately, it can also create variability in quality as well.
Contact a senior staff person at an Area Agency on Aging and discuss with them what they believe to be the biggest challenges facing the AAAs now and in the near future. You are the interviewer – probe with questions that will give you the information needed to share with your classmates.
Report the findings of the discussion in your post and include your perspectives on:
- Whether or not the concerns conveyed to you are policy related.
- The creativity and/or innovation of the AAA.
