Read the “Prison Gang Integration and Inmate Violence” and “Gangs/Security Threat Groups” articles, located in this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings.

Research at least security threat groups, sometimes referred to as gangs, and how they are linked to violence in many public and private correctional facilities.

Identify a different security threat group in the following correctional settings:

Setting 1: Private, maximum-security facility

Setting 2: Private, minimum-security facility

Setting 3: Public, medium-security facility

Select a different type of abuse from the following list for each setting:

Physical abuse

Emotional abuse

Mental abuse

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper addressing the following:

Describe the differences in the physical settings.

Evaluate the potential for physical, emotional, and mental abuse in each setting.

Identify incidents of physical, emotional, or mental abuse associated with the security threat groups identified.

Provide examples of how the security threat group might cause the different types of abuse to occur.
