Research and discuss the pros and cons of one specific treatment method or intervention strategy for psychological trauma and/or PTSD. In what types of situations is the method most appropriate? What are the success rates (short and long term)? Are there any instances where the method could be inappropriate, or even harmful?
You may find the websites below to be helpful when completing this assignment:
- National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at http://www.ncptsd.org
- International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies at http://www.istss.org
- American Red Cross at http://www.redcross.orgRemember, please focus on just one treatment and be very specific, for example:
If you chose cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), pick one specific therapy such as: exposure therapy, breathing retraining or biofeedback, cognitive restructuring, social skills therapy, marital therapy.
- If you chose pharmacotherapy, chose a specific medication.
I think this last assignment will provide some very interesting information that all students in the class would benefit from. You have the choice of how you submit this assignment.
If you choose option one (which I stress is optional, not required) then your paper would be available for other students to read. I am not asking students to respond to each others’ papers—in fact I want to emphasize that I want no critiquing of each other’s papers—it would merely be for the purpose of information sharing. And my evaluations of each paper will still be private. Please let me know if you have any questions about this option. |
For those of you who choose to share your paper with the class, I want to thank you in advance for your participation. For those of you who are not comfortable sharing your paper, I want to assure you that you will not be penalized; I respect your privacy.
