Write a Letter to a Local Member of Congress

In this assignment, you will use the following Transferable Skills:

  • communication

to contribute to professional, in-field knowledge through the creation of a product: a letter to a member of Congress.

This letter will demonstrate your ability to make sophisticated use of information including primary source material. In addition, your synthesis and/or evaluation skills will be combined with your knowledge, application, and/or analysis skills. This will be demonstrated by using information about an early childhood topic to communicate a message to a member of Congress.

In President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union Address, he called upon Congress to expand access to high-quality preschool for every child in America. He proposed investments that support a continuum of early learning opportunities from birth to age 5.

For this assignment, write a letter to a local member of Congress asking him or her to support one of the following topics:

  • Preschool Development Grants
  • Early Learning Communities
  • Race to the Top: Early Learning Challenge

Your letter should use an appropriate tone for communicating with a member of Congress. Your call to action must also include appropriate advocacy for diverse individuals. Make sure that your letter is formatted correctly using block letter format.

Your letter should be 1-page, include appropriate greetings, and be properly addressed. Include three paragraphs, one to answer each of the following:

  1. Who are you? Why are you writing?
  2. What specific details do you want to share?
  3. What action do you want taken?
