If you look at this fast pace he’s been on you have to respect it and the success he’s had,” said Richardson of Shumenov, whose victory over Kovacs Hopkins witnessed from ringside. “But when you look across that ring and you see an absolute legend, no one can tell you what that’s like.”
Hopkins plans include using any hint of intimidation against Shumenov when they’re in the ring together.”As the fight gets closer to April 19, you can’t block out that you’re getting ready to go up against the great Michael Jordan, or you’re ready to go up against the great this, or the great that, at the end of the day, that’s a fight, itself, of nerves. That’s a fight of anxiety attacks. That’s all kinds of things playing in your head,” said Hopkiins.
“How do you run back and forth in your mind about how you’re going to deliver and how you’re going to win this fight, what you’re going to work on and what you’re not going to work on? These things, I must use as an advantage, because age-wise, I’m at a disadvantage…I think that I am the king, behind Muhammad Ali, when it comes to knowing how to test a guy’s mentality, and testing the guy’s belief in himself…This is something I’ve been a master at.” Shumenov, for his part, expressed supreme confidence in his chances. “I’m going to show the world that I’m the best light heavyweight champion in the world, and a lot of people just underestimate me,” said Shumenov.
“They think that because I have just a few amount of fights, that’s how they judge me. But soon, they will find out, that with all of my abilities, I belong on the elite level, and that I’m the best light heavyweight champion of the world.” Whatever happens, said Richardson, Hopkins’ legacy is virtually etched in stone. “I hope that we can appreciate this guy while he’s here. Every single thing this guy does in this sport is history,” said Richardson. “Every press conference he has, every mouthpiece he puts in his mouth. Everything he does in this sport now is absolute history.”
Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) is confident that he’ll be holding onto his IBF light heavyweight champion on Saturday night in his unification bout against WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO’s) DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. Hopkins wants to win Shumenov’s WBA title and then possibly move forward to fight WBC champ Adonis Stevenson after that. The Stevenson fight is still not a definite thing in Hopkins’ plans, because he might choose to do something else. Stevenson wants the fight, but it’s still unclear whether Hopkins will choose to face him. Hopkins has a lot of easy marks for top contenders such as Dimitri Sukhotsky, Anatoliy Dudchenko, Nadjib Mohammedi and Sean Monaghan. With contenders like that, Hopkins could remain champion for another 2-3 years before someone eventually beats him.
Shumenov wants to make a name for himself by defeating me,” Hopkins said. “All the young guns want to make it big, and beating me would do that for Shumenov, but that’s not going to happen.” Hopkins is wrong about Shumenov making it big off of a win over him. Shumenov still wouldn’t be considered a big name even if he beat Hopkins. With Hopkins being nearly 50, no one is going to get a big name off of beating him. Shumenov, if he can win this fight, he’d still need to beat Adonis Stevenson before he could get a big name, and the chances of Shumenov doing that aren’t very good based on his past performances.
Shumenov is slow and fights in a robotic manner. The only way he beats Hopkins is if Hopkins gets old on Saturday night. But Shumenov will not beat a fighter like Stevenson and definitely not a fighter like Sergey Kovalev. You have to remember that Shumenov was fought to a standstill twice in his battles with Gabriel Campillo in 2009 and 2010. Shumenov was beaten by Campillo in 2009, and then he beat Campillo by a controversial decision in 2010. Campillo is the level where Shumenov is at, and he’s not going to be able to compete with Stevenson if he gets past Hopkins on Saturday night.
Hopkins was hit a lot in his last fight against Karo Murat last October. Hopkins got the win, but he was hit enough to show that he’s starting to deteriorate. Shumenov will be able to land as well on Saturday. The only question is will Hopkins throw enough punches to win a decision, because Shumenov will be there to be hit. By Jim Dower: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) is hoping to get past WBA champion Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO’s) on April 19th so that he can face the winner of the May 24th fight between WBC champion Adonis Stevenson and Andrzej Fonfara to ultimately decide who the No.1 light heavyweight is for Showtime televised 175 pounders.
We’ll probably never find out who the true best light heavyweight is because of the network obstacles that will prevent WBO champion Sergey Kovalv from fighting the winner of Showtime’s 175lb tournament. Hopkins is pretty confident that he’ll be able to get past Shumenov on the 19th. For Hopkins to do so, he’s going to have to look a lot better than he did in his last fight against Karo Murat last October. Hopkins was hit a lot in that fight by a limited opponent, and for the first time in his career he looked his age. Shumenov is far from being a great light heavyweight, but he’s definitely better than Murat. For this reason Hopkins is going to need to raise his game considerably to beat Shumenov and leave no doubt in doing so.
“It’s good for both of us, myself and Shumenov, because we’re going on April 19, in D.C. on Showtime,” Hopkins said. “[Stevenson’s move is] going to be mentioned by the commentators leading up to the fight. So, it’s out there. It was out there when Stevenson came on board, and we’ll see him fighting his fight in May. So all of these things are a win-win for the boxing fans. People want to see one guy. When you’re a fighter, you want all of the major belts. Stevenson has made it clear that he wants to fight other champions, myself, and anybody else … The winner will move forward, and I’m looking to be the winner, and to make history again.” Hopkins shouldn’t look past Shumenov because he very well could lose this fight if Shumenov is able to throw enough punches to make it difficult for Hopkins to keep up with him. Hopkins isn’t capable of throwing a lot of punches at this late stage in his career.
All Shumenov has to do is throw 50 or more punches per round, and focus on his accuracy to get the win over the aging Hopkins. It’s definitely possible because Hopkins’s last fight against Murat showed that he’s definitely deteriorated somewhat from his performance against Tavoris Cloud.
