Can Partisanship Save Citizenship?

In the article “Can Partisanship Save Citizenship?” Henry Farrell suggests that politics in 2000s saw a

sharp increase in both political discourse and participation, but not necessarily in the manner that public

intellectuals who lamented the decline in citizenship in preceding decades might have wished. He

attributes both of these developments to the intensification of partisanship. In this class, we have spent

a great deal of time exploring the significant impact of political parties in shaping how voters process

information about politics (and other matters) and motivating their participation in politics in various

forms. Explain how party identification affects the way people deal with politics and place Farrell’s
