Evaluating contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice

  • Explain and critically evaluate contemporary literature in the field of criminal justice
  • Identify ethical problems faced by individuals or communities and identify effective solutions
  • Explain the concept of social deviance and provide examples of deviant behavior in social context

Think about kinds of deviant behavior that interest you. Some examples are:

  1. Criminal behavior (this can include any specific kinds of criminal acts or behaviors you are interested in)
  2. Gang membership
  3. Sexual deviance (S&M, sexual offenses, or sexual fetishes)
  4. Body art (tattooing, piercing, etc.)
  5. Religious deviance (cults or groups that are starkly different from mainstream society (for example, polygamy, Amish Culture)
  6. White supremacists

Things to think about while completing this activity:

  • How do different researchers approach similar topics?
  • What questions are they asking?
  • How do their research methods allow them to answer their research questions?
  • How would the questions need to be different if they used a different research method?

For this project, you will use your “Virtual Library” to locate three articles on the subject area that you are interested in studying. In 500-750 words, summarize these three articles. Your summary should include the research questions being asked, the data sources that the authors used and the research methods. Also, make sure to summarize the conclusions that your articles reached.

Make sure to include full citations for each of the articles you are summarizing.

Your paper should include summaries of all three of your articles, as well as comparisons of these articles with each other. You may draw on the textbook and course materials from Modules 1-3 to inform your discussion, but the articles must not be drawn from the textbook. Make sure you demonstrate a clear understanding of how different kinds of data and research methods are used to address research questions. Your paper will be 750-1000 words and should conform to APA style formatting.

Project 2 is worth 10% of the overall course grade.
