Details:The USA PATRIOT Act is an Act of the U.S. Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. The title of the act is a ten letter acronym (USA PATRIOT) that stands for Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001. The Act was a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in this country, and significantly decreased law enforcement limitations on surveillance against those suspected of being terrorists. On May 26, 2011, President Barack Obama used an Autopen to sign a four-year extension of three key provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act while he was in France: roving wiretaps, searches of business records (the “library records provision”), and conducting surveillance of “lone wolves” — individuals suspected of terrorist-related activities not linked to terrorist groups. Those in support of the Patriot Act argue that it is keeping us safe from domestic and international terrorists and others who would do our country harm. Those critical of the Act contend that it diminishes our individual freedoms under the Constitution. Is the Patriot Act an ethical exercise of power, in your opinion? Comment using what you know about ethics, including Bentham and Kant. Your paper will be graded using the Writing Assignment Rubric provided in the syllabus. It is recommended that you check your paper against this rubric before submitting it. Writing Guidelines Each writing assignment deals with the topic under discussion.
